Updating from 2019

Wouldn't you know, it's already half a month into the new year...
I have a mountain of things to update you on, but I haven't been able to do so--my apologies.

First of all is the update on Sho-chan's medical expenses, which I requested help with back in November.
Thanks to 28 kind-hearted souls, we were able to gather together a total of ¥474,000.
Lots of adoptive families also offered their support. My heart warmed at all the offers of support from those of you who knew the real actions. I also received a lot of messages from people I've never once met: "I saw this on Facebook. Keep going!" "I can't take in a dog right now, but I'd love to help out!" "I heard about this from my daughter, who's a volunteer. I support you!"
All of this well-wishing made me about to cry. At the same time, I feel like I also have to ground myself and keep doing the hard work with my head held high.
I am deeply appreciative of all of your kindness.
After paying ¥272,630 in hospitalization fees, I used the remaining ¥201,370 for other foster dogs' medical bills. Thank you all so much.

Unfortunately I don't have good news about Sho-chan.
The post-operation transition was going smoothly when he was discharged on 11/6, as was the treatment for Cushing we started. His foster parent sent me optimistic messages that he was energetic and eating fine, but then on 12/26, I got a different message: "When I woke up this morning, it looked like he'd thrown up, and he's lost his spunk."
It was at the end of the year when the vet is packed and the stop taking patients, but I decided it would be too dangerous to push it until the next day. I elbowed my way into the doctor's office.
They found he had gotten a fever and inflammation, and he was immediately admitted into the hospital again.
When I visited him the next day, I noticed his eyes were open, but he didn't seem to be seeing anything. He didn't respond when I said his name, which was disconcerting. He was just lying there and wouldn't even try to eat.
I received news that he passed away the next morning.

Sho-chan, you were a matted ball of fur inside a go-between's cage.
I couldn't get you into a forever home, but your loving foster family allowed you to live out your life, taking you here and there. You came with me to events and were cooed at by everyone, and you had fun on your walks with the other dogs.
To H-san, who fostered Sho-chan: you have my deepest thanks for all of the love you poured into him. He was able to go to heaven as a dog having had a life brimming with happy memories.

Sho, who has been staying with a foster family, was found to have gallbladder mucocele and just underwent surgery a few days ago. Gallbladder mucocele is an illness in which gelatinous mucus inside the gall bladder builds up in excess. As a result, the gall bladder bulges out and causes bile secretion defects and rupturing. It's not quite sure what causes it, but some suspicions are a lowering of the gall bladder systolic function, gallstones and biliary sludge, metabolic abnormality with lipids, abnormal hormone balances (hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, etc.), and enteritis. Sho was diagnosed with both gallbladder mucocele and Chushing’s.

Oct. 23 - Surgery
After it was finished, the vet contacted me, much to my relief, to let me know that surgery went smoothly and I could pick Sho up on Nov. 4 or 5.

I went to go see him at the vet the next day. He was moving around and ate all of his food. 😊 I thought that if he's like this now, he should be out of the vet in no time...

Oct. 25 - His condition went far downhill 😱
No appetite, vomiting,  jaundice, anemia, hemolysis, abdominal dropsy.
The abdominal dropsy was removed, and when examined, no traces of a virus or anything was found.

It turned out to be postoperative pancreatitis.
For a while, we weren't sure if he'd be able to recover and had to prepare for the worst, but gradually his blood tests started coming back better, and he started eating again. The jaundice cleared up, and just as soon as we were about to celebrate...

Oct. 31 - When I went to visit him, I found him in the oxygen room.  😭
Pulmonary pneumonia. Sho doesn't have any teeth and his tongue is always drooping out of his mouth. Now that he's a senior dog as well, his tongue has lost some mobility, and I suspect food is often going down the wrong pipe. 😣 They say that misfortunes never come singly. It doesn't seem like he's got a fever, but his breathing is rough, and he hasn't recovered his strength back either...

Nov. 7 - He's been in the oxygen room for 1 full week. He got permission to be discharged and went back to his foster family. 😊
Nov. 14 - According to some tests, his progress is looking good, and we were able to start treatment for his Cushing's.

Today I just got the communication of the hospital fees.
Totaling ¥272,630 (about US$2,500). 💸💸💸

Since the beginning of the year, there's been major surgery after major surgery: heart surgeries for Toto, Pomeo, Pome-kichi, and Chiwako;  Goma's bladder cancer removal; Lori's bone fracture reduction; Julia's megaesophagus surgery; and the list goes on. Apart from surgery, I'm frankly also up to my neck in monthly medical bills and exam fees. I hate to ask, but can I please request your support in paying for some of the medical bills?

About Hana - Part 2

I sometimes have charges that, right before death, suddenly start eating and walking about, so I was pretty nervous, but it looks like Hana's actually getting better!!

She's got a bit of strength back, and her night whining has also made a return.

I still can't exactly relax, but she's hanging in there!  ☺️

About Hana

Our little Hana is hanging in there.

The joints in her jaw have stiffened, and she can only drink water and milk.

If there's any viscosity at all, she can't drink it.

It's been like this for 1 month now.

She's peeing every day, but only pooping about once every 3 days.
However, it looks and smells fine. (Her poop is like babies', drinking breastmilk.)
Her blood pressure and body temperature are also stable.

For a period, because of her dementia, she would start whining horribly in the night. She'd continue so much that I'd start to wonder where this strength is coming from, considering her condition. Going out on a limb, I decided to try and give her some Chinese medicine, and that seems to let her sleep soundly now.

The areas around her pelvis, shoulders, knees, etc. seem fine, but her cheekbones are getting bedsores.

She's not getting balanced nutrition, and I doubt her immunity is working. I'm afraid of blood poisoning and DIC, but I have my worries if I try to get her admitted to the hospital for treatment.

I consulted with the vet, and we've decided to dissolve some anti-biotics in her water. If she gets a fever, we'd need to rethink our approach.

When she was healthy, she was at about 10 kg. Now she's only around 5.

Hana, keep going!

It's been 10 days since Hana stopped eating.

She's drinking water I give to her in a syringe, but just barely.

She was lost when I took her in back in August of 2009, so I don't know her exact age, but it must be somewhere around 14 or 15.

She started showing signs of dementia about half a year ago. She couldn't go potty, and she started sticking her head into narrow spaces and was unable to move.

Last year around this time, Hana with the kittens

But those things aside, she was eating properly and maintaining her weight, with no problems to her organs. Her muscle started deteriorating bit by bit, and she stopped being able to support her weight.

It's been 10 days since she stopped eating. Nevertheless, every 4-5 hours or so she lets out a big whine and starts moving around flustered. If I stand her up supporting her weight, she starts stepping in place, and then after a while falls asleep while standing. I don't know where that strength is remaining--it's pretty odd. Is it her will to live...? She doesn't seem to be in pain or any suffering, luckily.

There's a strong possibility that we'll have to say goodbye some day soon. I'll keep caring for her so she can leave us naturally, when her time comes.

There were so many meetings and partings last year. Among them, the one that really is staying with me was Peach, who came from the Center. When I've processed through the whole ordeal, I'd like to introduce her to you all someday.

I've had my reasons for not writing long blog posts for quite a while...
I'm primarially caring for old and/or sick dogs, as well as those who were born with hereditary ailments, but nevertheless I've been targeted as a "care activist to keep an eye on." 😓 Apparently there are some people labeling me as just trying to gather up dogs that need high-cost medical care and trying to get donation money. I haven't been criticized by name exactly, but since I've found this out, it's been really weighing on me that people view me in such a way and scaring me quite a bit.

But it's also kind of silly to be afraid of criticism from people I've never even seen the faces of! It'd be like being afraid of a ghost that may or may not even be there in the first place.  (⌒-⌒; )

What I've been wanting to show the world through my blog has been this: the mothers and fathers of the puppies and kittens that are lined up all prim and proper at the pet shops, and their brothers and sisters who can't be sold and are disposed of behind the scenes; and additionally, those dogs and cats who are detained at the animal control centers run by the government and don't have any families to go to. You can't just go to a pet shop and buy a dog or a cat just because you think it's cute, just like how you can't take in a shelter dog or cat just because you think it's so sad. What I'm trying to do is to help people consider taking in another life.

The people who have never cared for a creature who you just think, "What a wonder it is that you're alive," or seen where they came from--I have no reason to be concerned about what those people say. Let the haters hate--coming to this conclusion has really lifted a weight off me.

There are so many people that are vets or healthcare providers themselves who adopt from me. It's an odd thing, really. I'm able to get a lot of professional advice from them, and sometimes they help me out with surgeries and other such things. The same goes for trimmers who help me out with trimming, and the people who support me by donating potty sheets and doggy diapers. I'm able to continue what I'm doing thanks to these people. I have no reason to be afraid of ghosts. 😣

My aim is to let those in my care have a chance at happiness, all as individual animals and not a "mass" of them, whether that means they find a happy forever home, or they spend their last days here with me.

Tama's ready to find a home!

I got Tamasaburo (Tama, for short) from the animal control center last June.

As you can see, he was a mass of messy tangles.

He had some sort of collar around his neck, but it's unclear as to whether he was actually a pet or not.

There weren't any real problems with him when I took him in for an exam. Filaria came back negative. He's probably around 7 years old.

He pees around to mark his territory, so I'm needing to put a potty belt on him.

He's a master at walkies and loves people!

When our volunteers walk him, he doesn't mind who holds the leash--he's polite all the time.

He's quite a handsome boys with big eyes.

About Subaru

Subaru had some major problems with his deteriorating health and had to be admitted long term into the hospital at the end of last year.
His bottom jaw was initially broken, but even with time, he was able to eat properly and use his tongue. He had mitral insufficiency, kidney damage, and tracheal collapse--so many things to keep me worried--and was taking so many medications. Before Christmas his appetite started waning and he seemed lethargic, so since the vet would be closed for the New Year break, I decided to take him in for an appointment. His blood tests came back terrible, and he was immediately admitted to the oxygen room. Unfortunately he had to spend the New Years holidays in the vet. Since he wasn't eating properly, his nutritional balance was also off.

Even though he wasn't getting enough nutrition, he couldn't eat with his mouth. At the same time, I was afraid that if we tried to force-feed him, the food might go down the wrong pipe and cause bigger problems, so we decided to termporarily feed him through a tube down his neck.
We could do some jaw reconstruction surgery once he gained some weight and had a more stable condition.

His stomach seemed to have shrunk as well, so we fed him small amounts slowly over several times.  More than anything, I was afraid of pnemonia caused by vomiting-induced pulmonary aspiration.

One day I went to visit him like usual, and I noticed something odd about his breathing. I told the nurse, who got the vet right away...  It was pulmonary edema--water had filled in his lungs.

I felt like praying every single day looking at Subaru lying down in the oxygen room like that.

After about a week he was able to leave the oxygen room for the kennel, but we had to cancel the blood transfusion. Due to this, his tongue was extremely dry. His immunity seems to have gone down considerably, and the blood vessels in his ears have become inflamed again. The blood flow to his tail is bad, so the cells in the tip have died. Some injuries have occurred without us noticing and spread, causing more necrosis.

Despite all this, he's now recovered enough to be able to stand. The nurse told me that he goes berserk when it's time to change his neck and tail gauze.

Just as I was thinking that maybe he'll get better becuase he's put on a bit of weight, next started the seizures.

With this, now jaw surgery becomes impossible. Surgery would be over several hours, I've been told. Even under normal conditions, considering Subaru's age, I'm hesitant to put him under anaesthesia, and now the risk is even higher with the start of the seizures.

We've had to stop his IV, and since it's just tube feeding and keeping his temperature stable, I could do these things for him at home. I wanted to take him back immediately, but the doctors won't allow it. He doesn't look too peaceful, but he's sleeping and not moving. In all honesty, I'm afraid he doesn't have much time left; that's why I want to bring him home even more.

A month since he was admitted to the vet, I finally got permission to take him out.
Allllllright! We'll get you the nutrition you need and make you better!

They were using the a/d in the vet, but that can stop up often, so I decided to soften it up with some hot water to make it flow better, which caused the amount to increase. For this reason, I decided to go to Royal Canin for outpatient support. The result: amazing diarrhea. 😱 I decided to look for something that would be okay in small quantities; when I tried Royal Canin's Critical, the diarrhea stopped and he seems to be stable enough. Alright, let's go with this, then! I'm aiming at one a day.

But you know, this isn't easy on my wallet.  😓 So thinking about the long-term, I move to puppy milk, which he was okay with. It raises the threshold for immunity as well, so we were able to add some vitamin B, C and E, some DHA, lecithin, and more. Bit by bit, watching out for diarrhea and vomiting.

I took him to the vet once a week, and during one of our visits, they disinfected his neck and tail. His weight wasn't going up, but his condition wasn't changing either. His blood test results were good as well. He started barking when he needed something and moving around, so he was recovering on a good track.

However, come March he started throwing up.  According to the doctor, the tip of the tube in his esophogus was potentially stimulating his mucous membrane and causing inflammation. But we can't take out the tube, so we decided to give him medicine and see if it clears up.

And on March 21st, he had a massive bout of vomitting! Vomit matter was coming not just out of his mouth, but also his nose and neck...
I took him for tests the next morning. According to his blood test, the reading on his kidneys had gone sky high, so he was lacking a mineral balance. Hypernatremia. I had him admitted immediately. When I went to check in on him in the afternoon, he was barking, which I saw as a good sign. However, I was told that, while it could indeed be a good sign, there could be some problems remaining in his brain.

Becuase of the pulmonary edema last time, I was concerned. What could they do without giving him an IV? However, the reading improved each day, and within one week he was able to come home. That being said, he's still not in a good state.

Subaru will be relegated to tube feeding forever. He won't get to experience the joys of eating. His vision is gone, and his muslces are weakening to the point that he can't move as he wishes. What kind of quality of life is that? Can he be happy?

There's a chance that this time next year, Subaru will not be with us. I can merely do my best to cherish him being alive with no pain or suffering.
So then, let's keep an eye on him.

Summing up 2017

2017 started with a mom and her babies abandoned at my doorstep in January. Well, it's been one heck of a year.

New dogs: 12
Adoptions: 5
Passed away: 8

There are so many memories for every single one of my dogs, and one I particularly would like to write about is Hanako. Yes, Hanako, whom Yamazaki-san doted on ever so much. (For more about Yamazaki-san's story: https://sayaxwxapr11.blogspot.jp/2014/07/blog-post_5.html)

For certain reasons, she moved from her regular home to me in July.
I had heard about her from Yamazaki-san, but she was so much more stubborn upon meeting her than I had expected. She's a nervous girl and often barks for attention. She was the model dog?

She has sturdy hips and legs, but her eyes are white and she probably can't see too well. I can't really blame her for becoming nervous with that in mind with her environment changing so dramatically.

Yamazaki-san was always saying that her stomach is weak and she's concerned about food. For sure, she does have some bowel troubles, even if it's not full-blown diarrhea. It seemed that Royal Canin's gastrointestinal low fat dog food works for her, so we'll just see how it goes from there.

She's a bit lacking in her social life, and not too good with others. She sort of freezes when volunteers call out to her as well. 😖
One of my cats, Chiko, will sometimes come and eat her food, and she will just sit back nervously like, "Umm...excuse me...sorry...that's uh..."

Since she's like that and still healthy, I felt so bad for her needing to come to my place.
I had originally planned to take her in if she got bed-ridden and difficult to deal with, but that's not quite how things worked out. So I just had to tell her, "Hey there, I can't quite take care of you like Yamazaki-san did, and I think I'll let you down in many ways, but stick it out, okay?" as she started her new life.

The first month was pretty intense--her barking, I mean. It showed how uneasy she was, but gradually she stopped--hopefully because she was getting used to living here? But she still often was trembling and nervous, and if another dog started barking, she would start yelling loudly too.

Since she sometimes had diarrhea and vomiting, I decided to get her an endoscopy, but was hesitant, considering she's 17 years old and might not be able to take the anesthesia. It's not like she was constantly having those symptoms, and she wasn't losing weight, so I wondered if it was stress. I talked with the doctor, and we decided to put her on Zylkene for 3 months. Hopefully it'll work....

Then on Dec. 25, she left half her food, and then the next day wouldn't eat and couldn't stand up properly. When I gave her canned food on the 27th, she ate it all. On the 28th, she couldn't raise her neck and wouldn't eat. Then on the 29th, she quietly passed away during the night. It was all so sudden.

Hanako spent most of her doggy life freely under Yamazaki-san's love and care. After Yamazaki-san passed on, her life dramatically changed, and growing old and friend-less must have been so difficult. During walks she would drag the leash around as if looking around for Yamazaki-san, like "No, not here, but he must be somewhere..."

Hanako, you finally are able to meet your beloved Yamazaki-san. He came to pick you up with Taro, didn't he?
I think it must have been a tough 3 years.
Rest in peace with Yamazaki-san.

About Joyce

It's been a while since I last posted.
I have a mountain of things I want to report, but this time I want to talk about a dachshund girl I took in the other day.

I was contacted by a shelter affiliate about a dachshund in the animal control center with a thoracic vertebral fracture and suppressed urination problems. I decided to take her in since it seemed like an emergency, and I doubted anyone else would be willing to help her. I took her straight from the center to our family vet and asked about her situation.

When I received the initial news about her, my mind immediately jumped to Don-chan.
Don-chan was abandoned in the parking lot of a home improvement center. When I took him in, he was paralyzed from the waist down, but through rehabilitation and acupuncture, he became able to walk again. Now he's living happily with a new family. That's why this time I figured that even with her lower half malfunctioning, we might be able to get her a little wheelchair, and that it wasn't quite such a tragedy.

However, when I took her to the vet, the doctor's face was much more stern than I had expected.
They explained to me with X-rays that the situation was much more serious than previously thought.

1) Her thoracic vertebrae has broken, and her spinal cord has snapped
Severe damage to the spinal cord may lead to fusion necrosis. Inflammation from the damaged area up to the side of the head will result, causing swelling to spread and further weakening (necrosis) of the spinal cord. In the end, the medulla oblongata, which controls the nerves vital to life support, will also weaken. As a result, she will pass away in pain from difficult breathing. If this happens, it's almost 100% guaranteed to result in death.

2) Pyometra (a life-threatening infection of the uterus)
In the midst of all this misfortune, at least the pus was able to go out. She's unable to get surgery in her current condition, so we just have to try and control it with medicine and wait for her to gain her strength back.

In any case, all we could do now is just pray that the weakening doesn't happen.

I go to check up on her every day, but I got the feeling that she doesn't have any strength in her eyes. Her eyes are swimming around, and I can't tell where she's looking at. She doesn't seem to have any brain problems, so it's possibly depression resulting from shock. I decided to name her Joyce. Joyce, when you get better, let's go home together.

At one point, I notice something.
She doesn't have any external wounds.
When I first heard about her, I just figured she was probably hit by a car when she was lost, but there are no visible wounds.
I looked up what sort of cases would result in broken thoracic vertebrae.

  • A car accident
  • Falling from a high location
  • A pathological fracture causing gradual bone weakening and fractures due to tumors or an endocrine disorder
  • Abuse, such as being strongly kicked or hit

She has pyometra, but this doesn't connect with any pathological bone fractures. There's blood poisoning before bone fractures, right? Falling from a high place or being hit by a car would cause scratches and bruising, such as on the hairless parts of her, like her nose and paws, or joints like her knees, elbows, or shoulders.

I found the above article while doing my research, titled "How to tell if an animal has been abused vs. involved in an accident"

This is what it says:
"Accidents frequently result in wounds to the tips of the limbs or below the pelvis--it is believed that this is due to being hit often right when the animal is trying to get out of the way of a motorcycle or car. On the other hand, abuse often results in fractures to the head and ribs (especially the upper ribs). It is believed that this is due to the abuser using their fists, feet, or items such as whips or sticks to inflict damage to the animal."

So, Joyce was abused?
We don't have any hard proof, so I can't say for sure, and even if we did, we don't know who previously owned her, so there's nothing we could do anyways.

It's a well-known fact that many arrested criminals also have a high rate of a history of animal abuse.
Animal welfare laws list the following bans on abuse and abandonment:

  • For the reckless murder of or infliction of damage to a pet: up to 2 years of imprisonment or a fine of up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • For abuse related to weakening due to withholding of food or water to a pet: a fine of up to 1,000,000 yen.
  • For the abandonment of a pet: a fine of up to 1,000,000 yen.

This is all they get for animal abuse, which so often leads to even worse crimes in the future? Well, I have a lot of issues with the laws, but more importantly is the issue of whether these laws are actually enforced properly.

Even the middleman in Yaita wasn't prosecuted.
According to someone I know who's familiar with law, "If this had taken place in a prefecture with more awareness for animal welfare, this may not have been the result."
But isn't that in and of itself odd? That means that whether or not these laws are enforced is basically dependent on location.
It means that officials and police aren't using the rule of law effectively. So animal welfare laws are just some sort of lofty ideals?
No matter how strict the laws become, it means nothing if they're not enforced properly.
(There's one more thing I want to talk about related to animal welfare laws, but I'll save that for another day.)

But we've gotten off track.

On the 8th day of her hospitalization, her nictitating membrane was protruding, and I got the feeling that her energy levels have gone even farther down. She had stopped eating, and was getting her nutrients through a syringe.
"Maybe this is it..."
Late into that night, her breathing got worse, and her body temperature went down. The doctors did all they could, but she became unable to breathe. Joyce had passed on. The tissue softening had happened.
Respiratory failure...she must have suffered. Her final moments of life had been painful, and then she left us.
I can't even say that at least she's comfortable now.
I guessed she was around 7 to 9 years old. I wonder if she ever had any happy moments during her life? Had she ever felt happiness or love?

One more tick to the tally of innocent victims of gross and irresponsible humans.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
May you live a happy next life when you are reborn.

This is about the prosecution of the operator again. They announced non-indictment because of a lack of reasonable doubt. However, the conditions the animals are living in are unsanitary to the extreme, without even excrement being taken care of. The normalization of these conditions shows how clearly this points to neglect.

Furthermore, this ridiculous decision was made without actually considering the veterinary decisions and facts pointed out by professionals. This non-indictment gives the operators the green light to keep up the abusive conditions.

It's over. We were destroyed.

This was the outcome:

Charges dropped in the abuse case.
Fined 100,000 yen for violations in rabies prevention.

Who in the world ever imagined this outcome.

Was it premature...?

It's like I can hear S's loud laughs:

"See? I told you--I'm not doing anything wrong."

Yeah.

When they're in conditions like these:

Conditions like these:

And this neglect:

Sure, that's not abuse.

I thought animal laws were there to protect animals.

Looks like I'm wrong.

The operator was the one protected.

Even though hundreds and hundreds of poor babies saw hell there,

their bodies being destroyed, their hearts being destroyed, and dying,

it's a violation of rabies prevention measures with one shiba inu that's ending it with just a fine of 100,000.
