虹の橋へ Going to Heaven

April 6th
When I go in to check on her in the middle of the night, she's still standing in a daze. The necrosis in her nose is spreading, and it's hard for her to breathe. I held her for a bit, and return her to bed once I can hear that she's fallen asleep. As soon as I do so, she stands up again. I wonder if the pain's gotten worse...

April 7th
I go to check up on her in the morning, and her water container's bright red. There are splats of bloodstains on her doggy bed and mat. When I lift her up and look at her, blood's seeping not only from around her mouth, but also from her eyes. Her tearducts have been done in.

Lala doesn't seem too exhausted, but her body's hot. I wonder if she has a fever. Her body must be fighting the cancer with all that it's got.
I wonder if she won't eat after all. I half want her to eat, half want her not to eat.
She eats. She eats everything, just like usual. It's just that what she eats is coming out of the nectozied part of her cheek. She's bleeding, and it sounds like it's hard for her to breathe.

It would be cruel of me to make you work any harder than this.

I take her to the hospital in the afternoon. She's sleeping on my lap as we wait for our turn. There's a weight about her, an elasticity to her skin, a vitality to her fur. From the left side she looks like a healthy girl with nothing wrong. But there's a rotting smell coming off of her, the smell of a body dying from cancer. The right side of her body is dead.

「これ以上は苦しませるだけ」 先生も同じ意見でした。
"Any more would just be making her suffer." The doctor agrees with me.

At 6:35 pm, Lala goes to heaven.

It had only been 82 days since I'd taken her in, far too soon to need to say goodbye.

I'd never heard her bark even once. No matter what a racket the dogs are making around her, she never felt dragged into the barking. She never even so much as gave a yelp when I applied antiseptic. I wonder what her voice sounded like...

Lala, you taught Mommy an important lesson. Thank you for coming to me. Thank you for letting me take care of you. You don't need to suffer anymore. Rest in peace.
